The Past
Family and Friends: Out of the amis, he'd say that his best friends are Courfeyrac and Enjolras, even if they don't always reciprocate their friendship. He gets on well with the rest of the amis, often talking to Jehan about various books and so on. The only one of the amis he doesn't really get on with is Grantaire, but then again who does?
He has an odd relationship with his late estranged father. He never heard much from him, only to start caring for him after he died, even though he wasn't particularly moved. He was fairly close with grandfather growing up, seeing as it was his grandfather that raised him, along with his aunt. As he grew older, his relationship with his grandfather grew rockier due to differences in political views.
History: Marius was born in the spring 1812, just before the French Invasion of Russia. At the time, his father was away fighting in the war and his mother didn't live long past childbirth due to catching an infection, his grandfather always tried to avoid the subject when Marius asked. So the responsibility of looking after Marius fell to his aunt and grandfather.
As he grew up, he led a fairly sheltered life. He had a private tutor and spent most of his time in the gardens of his grandfather's home. He led a fairly privileged life, filled with expensive toys and books thanks to his grandfather's large fortune. He never saw his father, which he found out years later, through a letter left for him by his father, was because of his grandfather.
At the age of 18, he left his grandfather's home to go to university in Paris to study law. Marius was pleased to be free of his controlling grandfather, who was far too set in his monarchist ways. It was here he met Courfeyrac and was introduced to the rest of the amis.
Personality
General Personality: Marius is an intelligent, if slightly awkward, young man. He is also shy, thanks to the years spent inside the walls of his grandfather's home with little contact with other children his age. This sometimes leads to him appearing to be a little creepy, but he means well. When faced with times of stress (Like the barricade), he has a tendency to act over dramatically, which doesn't help the situation. He cares a lot for his friends and family, always putting them before himself, even if they don't always take him too seriously. After the fall of the barricades, he began to suffer from nightmares, always featuring his fallen friends. (I can't think of anything else right now :S)
Weaknesses: He lets his emotions get the best of him, leading to his friends never taking him seriously. Despite being intelligent, he can be a little... dense at times. He is fairly gullible and easily led.
Strengths: He's very devoted and compassionate, even if he doesn't want to be. As already mentioned, he is intelligent, so that's another strength.
Fears: He's scared of failing, not only himself, but failing Cosette and his friends, he made a promise whilst in throes of life and death after the barricades. He's scared of the unknown, like what happens to us all when we die.
Dreams and Goals: Besides spending the rest of his life with Cosette, Marius wants to be a successful lawyer and make a difference in Paris, something his friends strived for but never succeeded with. He would also like to travel, and see the world outside of Paris.
Marius silently cursed to himself, hurrying through the cobbled streets of Paris. He had been working late into the night, translating a collection of Lord Byron poems into French. The salary wasn't great, but it was a living. Having worked late into the night, Marius had overslept and in result, would be late for class. Checking his pocket watch, he ran his free hand through his hair. He had half an hour to drop the folio off at the publisher's and get to class, he wasn't going to make it in time.
He cut through the market square, heading for the south corner, where the publishing house was situated. Crashing through the door, he set the folio down on the counter. "Here's half of it, you'll get the rest tomorrow." He nodded and bolted out the door and ran through the square. Without noticing at all, he bumped into a girl a few years younger than himself, sending her basket to the floor. "Oh my... I'm so sorry!" He picked up the basket and handed it back to the girl. He offered a smile but was quickly stunned into silence. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. His heart was pounding in his chest, his palms becoming clammy. "I... I have to go." He cast one last look at her and ran off.
He got to his class about 10 minutes late and snuck in as quietly as he could, which wasn't very quietly as was gasping for breath and walked into his desk. Nudging the young man who was half asleep next to him, he grinned. "Courfeyrac, you won't believe what just happened!"
